7 Safety Hacks for Heat Wave Protection

Share

You know that feeling when you step outside and walk straight into a preheated oven. Heatwaves – not exactly a summer dream. But don’t worry we got you covered with 7 Safety Tips for Heat Waves to keep you cool.

Safety Tips for Heat Wave

With this unbearable heatwave are you asking the same question as us, how to protect from heat waves? Here are 7 tips and hacks to protect yourself and your loved ones from this heat.

1. Stay Hydrated

Water is your best friend during a heat wave. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, make an effort to drink plenty of water. Consider yourself a cool, refreshing plant; hydrate those roots (and insides!). Bonus safety for carrying a reusable water bottle, which is environmentally friendly and keeps your drink cold.

2. Stay Indoors

Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the sun becomes a big hairdryer set to “burn.” So, if possible, stay inside and turn up the air conditioning. If you don’t have access to AC? Don’t worry! Public libraries, malls, and even grocery stores can provide brief cool shelters.

3. Dress Cool and Light

Avoid dark clothing that traps heat like the oven. Choose loose-fitting, lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen – imagine breezy summer dresses or comfortable linen trousers and shorts. Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses whenever you go out. A wide-brimmed hat provides shade for your face and neck, while sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

4. Take Frequent Showers or Baths

A cold shower or bath is your best defense against the heat. Feeling fancy? Get yourself a bottle of mist and spray yourself with chilly water all day. If it’s not available try a moist washcloth applied to the face and neck is also effective.

5. Sweat Less, Rest More

Save the challenging workouts for cooler days. If you must exercise outside, do it in the early morning or late evening. Remember to listen to your body. Feeling dizzy or nauseous? Take a break and go back inside.

6. Cars Can Overheat

This is a big one: never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a “quick” errand. The temperature inside a car can rise dramatically in minutes, placing passengers at considerable risk.

7. Check on People

Keep an eye out for your vulnerable neighbors, particularly the elderly, young children, and those with medical issues. Check up on them regularly to ensure they are well-hydrated and chilled. A kind reminder and a refreshing drink of water can go a long way.
